Awareness, Acceptance and Action
Awareness, acceptance and action are often defined as the three A’s of change. A real change. A change towards betterment. I think making a complete 180 change in one go can be scary which may nudge our procrastination. Thus making us stay away from the change. A step-by-step process can be can help us build the impulse for mind and body change.
Ask yourself these questions?
- What kind of world would I create if I had the opportunity to do so?
- Would I rather live in an environment filled with chaos, anxiety, danger, or serenity, peace, and hope?
- How about giving change a genuine try?
What is awareness?
Awareness is a conscious state of being. It is being open and curious to know, understand, perceive and reflect upon some situation or event. But in this context, I think it is like being aware of how something will have behavioural changes in one’s life. Awareness is being conscious. Asking questions like — ‘What is it about me that I am not able to see?’ or ‘What is it that is making me react like this?’ or ‘What is it about me that is making me behave like this?’ Awareness is the psychological step. Awareness is the booster for the process of real growth
What is acceptance?
Acceptance is being aware that your behaviour is not ideal and you’re accepting it without resisting that it’s happening. One has to be openly curious to accept all parts of themselves including the ones they do not like. It is hard accepting things when you are accustomed to your behaviour. It will be hard especially if you have the habit to control situations and people. Acceptance can be like a spiritual step
Dr David Daniels describes acceptance as “Opening the heart in kindness to self and others, especially to one’s reactivity and upset.” It’s important, he says, to realize that “This doesn’t mean capitulating, condoning, or agreeing with our own or others’ behaviour.”
What is the action?
When we have licensed the self-awareness and acceptance, comes the action part. When we are aware and have accepted what needs to be changed, then comes the real part. Real change will happen when you have accepted the reality rather than running from it. And constructive action will happen when we are aware of the reality, the truth. The real behavioural change will happen when we are aware and have accepted our thoughts and feelings. Personal growth will happen when we are curious and open to seeking something more. And it is of great strength if we decide to take some help for this. Practising acceptance and bringing it into action is the true sense of the word.
Moving through these steps gradually will give us the experience to create a real constructive positive change. Having an open mind and be curiosity will open many options.
Believe me, the benefits of self-growth are worth the wait.
